Background & History

Originally appearing in "Crosby Gaige’s Cocktail Guide and Ladies’ Companion" in 1941, the Fancy-Free cocktail was likely not created by Gaige, but he's often attributed for naming it. The original recipe: === 1 jigger Fine Arts Whiskey Dash of Angostura Bitters Dash of Orange Bitters 2 dashes maraschino Frost the rim of a cocktail glass with lemon juice and fine sugar. Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into prepared glass. === Fine Arts Whiskey is no longer made and is variably substituted with either bourbon or rye.

Notes & Review

An Old Fashioned with maraschino liqueur as the sweetener instead of sugar. Those who like maraschino will enjoy this. If you don't love the flavor, I'd recommend potentially using a 6:1 ratio instead (1 1/2 oz whiskey to 1/4 oz maraschino. Subbing in a bourbon might also sweeten it up a bit more compared to the rye. I, for one, prefer the simpler Old Fashioned.
